Weekly Release Notes - August 15, 2026
Release Focus
This release tightened the parts of Hi-Eight that affect trust before and during a viewing or creator-payment workflow. The clearest user-facing changes are in film detail playback, browse/search wording, creator earnings setup, and public search visibility.
Free-with-ads playback on consumer film detail pages is now more reliable when the platform uses internal promotion trailers or catalog trailer fallback. The player now verifies real playable media, records ad activity only after playback actually starts, and keeps the preroll display contained on desktop and mobile.
Creator monetization language is more consistent with the current product model. Film detail pages now describe platform subscription access as Hi-Eight subscription access, and creator earnings setup now reflects the current PayPal payout direction instead of presenting Stripe Connect as the required creator payout path.
Search visibility also received a cleanup pass. Public pages, publisher pages, QA/staging behavior, sitemap checks, canonical metadata, and stale crawler URLs now have clearer handling so search issues can be separated from expected exclusions and protected media behavior.
Highlights
- Consumer film detail pages now use clearer Hi-Eight subscription wording instead of generic streaming-subscription copy.
- Browse/search filters now describe the active genre filter as genres, not audience tags.
- Creator earnings now presents PayPal payout setup as the current payout path and keeps tax onboarding separate.
- Free-with-ads preroll playback on film detail pages now uses real playable media paths and better fallback behavior.
- Preroll video presentation now fits inside the selected media area on desktop and mobile.
- Search Console triage now has a repeatable URL-pattern process instead of treating raw crawler counts as individual defects.
- QA and staging hosts are now protected from public indexing behavior.
- Publisher pages no longer expose obsolete follow-action URLs to crawlers.
- Database failure handling now returns faster during outages instead of tying up requests through nested retry loops.
New Features
PayPal Payout Setup In Creator Earnings
Creator earnings now shows PayPal payout setup as the current creator payout path. Creators can see that payout setup is incomplete, submit a PayPal payout destination for review, and understand that tax onboarding remains a separate requirement before payouts can be sent.
This matters because creator revenue trust depends on making the path to payment understandable without pointing filmmakers at an unavailable or unapproved payout provider.
Search Console Triage Process
The project now has a repeatable search visibility review process for Search Console findings. Instead of creating one task per reported URL, the process groups issues by pattern, such as stale public actions, protected media URLs, non-indexed browse filters, canonical alternates, QA URLs, or true public-page problems.
This gives the team a practical way to improve search visibility while preserving intentional protections around private pages, search result pages, and playback media.
Improvements
Clearer Film Detail Subscription Language
Consumer film detail pages now describe subscription availability as Hi-Eight Subscription and Included with Hi-Eight subscription. This appears in the film detail access options and avoids making the platform sound like a generic streaming catalog or creator-channel subscription service.
More Accurate Browse And Search Labels
The browse/search filter panel now labels the current filter as genre-based. Viewers will see wording such as Narrow by genre, All genres, and Search for more genres... instead of tag language that implied audience-generated tagging behavior that is not active in that surface.
More Reliable Free-With-Ads Preroll
Consumer film detail playback now handles free-with-ads preroll media more reliably. Internal promotion trailers and catalog trailer fallback now use playable media paths, and playback activity is recorded only after a preroll actually starts.
The result is a cleaner viewing flow: the viewer should see actual preroll playback before the selected film, rather than titles flashing past because a returned media URL could not be served.
Better Preroll Layout On Desktop And Mobile
The free-with-ads preroll panel now fits inside the selected media display area. Slot labels, titles, video, and controls remain visible at both desktop and mobile sizes, and the video keeps its aspect ratio without overflowing the page.
Cleaner Publisher Pages For Search Crawlers
Publisher pages no longer expose unavailable follow/unfollow actions. Old /consumer/follow/... URLs now return a deliberate non-indexable stale-action response instead of acting like broken public product pages.
Platform & Reliability
QA And Staging Search Protection
QA and staging hosts now use crawler controls that prevent them from being treated as public production search results. QA pages can be excluded from indexing without changing production search behavior or the production sitemap.
This reduces Search Console noise and avoids wasting public search attention on temporary environments.
Stronger Public Film Page Search Checks
Film detail search visibility checks now verify successful public responses, self-canonical URLs, film-specific titles and descriptions, crawlable page content, structured data, and sitemap alignment for representative published films.
These checks do not guarantee that Google will index every film, but they help confirm that Hi-Eight is not blocking valid public film pages through technical SEO mistakes.
Faster Failure During Database Outages
Database request handling now avoids repeated nested retry cycles during outages. When the database is unavailable, the site can return from failed operations more predictably instead of appearing hung for an extended period.
Safer Analytics And Social Requests
Analytics session rendering and outbound social API behavior received safety improvements. These changes reduce the risk of unsafe display behavior in analytics views and help external social-service problems fail more cleanly instead of disrupting the application.
Bug Fixes
Fixed Generic Subscription Copy On Film Detail
The consumer film detail page no longer says a film is available with a generic streaming subscription. Subscription availability is now tied directly to Hi-Eight platform subscription language.
Fixed Browse Filter Terminology
The browse/search page no longer labels creator genre filtering as tags. This keeps the current discovery experience honest while leaving room for future audience-generated tags as a separate feature.
Fixed Free-With-Ads Preroll Playback Gaps
Free-with-ads playback on film detail pages now avoids broken preroll media paths, prevents false play tracking before media starts, and continues correctly into the selected film after preroll completion or verified fallback handling.
Fixed Preroll Mobile Overflow
The preroll player no longer clips labels, titles, controls, or video in the selected media area on narrow viewports.
Fixed Obsolete Follow URL Exposure
Publisher pages no longer render unavailable follow controls or expose obsolete follow URLs that were producing avoidable crawler 404s.
Fixed QA Indexing Noise
QA/staging environments now send clear noindex behavior so downtime or test-environment responses do not create public Search Console noise.
